About Me

Born on September 2, 1963, in Leningrad (now St. Petersburg).

In 1986, G.A. Turichin graduated from the Physico-Mechanical Faculty of the Leningrad Polytechnic Institute (now Peter the Great St. Petersburg Polytechnic University, SPbPU) with a degree in "Metal Physics and Physical Metallurgy." After graduation, he worked in the Department of Welding Technology and Strength of Welded Joints at SPbPU. Over the years, he progressed through the academic administrative ranks—from assistant to department head and dean. In 1991, he defended his Candidate of Sciences (Ph.D.) dissertation ("Physical Fundamentals of Weld Formation in Deep-Penetration Electron Beam Welding"), and in 2000, he earned his Doctor of Technical Sciences degree ("Theoretical Foundations and Modeling of Deep-Penetration Beam Welding of Metals"), later becoming a full professor.

From 2001 to 2014, G.A. Turichin headed the "Welding and Laser Technologies" Department, and from 2009 to 2013, he served as Dean of the "Materials Science and Technology" Faculty at SPbPU. Under his leadership, both the department and faculty repeatedly won first place in SPbPU’s "Department of the Year" and "Faculty of the Year" competitions.

In November 2016, he was appointed Acting Rector of the St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University (SPbSMTU). Following elections in March 2018, he was elected Rector by the university’s staff and officially approved by the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education.

Turichin has developed and teaches three specialized courses for 4th- and 5th-year students, oversees two master’s programs, a dual-degree program, and an English-language program for international students. He mentors young specialists and graduate students, having supervised two Ph.D. candidates. His courses include:

  • Fundamentals of Thermophysics and Continuum Mechanics

  • History of Materials Science Technologies

  • Physics of Concentrated Energy-Matter Interaction

  • Modeling of Beam Processing

  • Advanced Materials Processing Technologies

  • Special Methods of Material Joining

He serves on the dissertation council of the Prometey Central Research Institute of Structural Materials, chairs SPbSMTU’s dissertation council, and is a member of the Academic Council of SPbSMTU and the Scientific and Technical Council of SPbPU.

Scientific and Professional Achievements

Since 1986, Gleb A. Turichin has been renowned for his research in laser, electron-beam, and hybrid welding technologies. Rising from assistant to professor at SPbPU’s "Welding and Laser Technologies" Department, he became the founding director of the Institute of Laser and Welding Technologies (ILWT) in 2004.

From 2001–2014, he served as Department Head, and from 2009–2013, as Dean of the Materials Science and Technology Faculty. From 2009–2022, he directed the Russian-German Laser Technology Center at SPbPU. Since 2016, he has led SPbPU’s "Laser Technologies" Department.

From 2006–2016, he was Scientific Director of the Laser Technology Center LLC, and since 2017, he has been Scientific Head of the Shipbuilding Laser Center at JSC "TsTSS".

Turichin specializes in theoretical research, modeling, and development of beam-based material processing technologies and equipment, establishing himself as a leading expert in Russia and internationally. Under his guidance, R&D projects have advanced laser, hybrid, and additive manufacturing technologies, including:

  • Laser/hybrid welding, cutting, cladding, and heat treatment systems

  • Direct laser deposition (DLD) for shipbuilding

  • Software for computational analysis of laser, electron-beam, and hybrid welding

Editorial and Conference Roles

He is an active member of:

  • The Elsevier Editorial Board

  • Editorial boards of "Automatic Welding," "Welding and Diagnostics," and "Photonics" journals

  • Scientific committees for LANE (Germany), NOLAMP (Finland), and Numerical Analysis of Weldability (Austria)

  • Organizing committee of the "Beam Technologies and Laser Applications" conference

Turichin regularly presents at major international conferences (e.g., Hannover Messe, LASYS, LANE, LiM, LASER World of PHOTONICS) and exhibitions ("Photonics. World of Lasers and Optics," "Alusil MViT").

Awards and Honors

  • Order "For Merit to the Fatherland" Medal (2020)

  • Russian Government Prize in Education (2010) for "Innovative Training of Specialists in Laser Material Processing"

  • Two Medals from the Russian Security Council

  • Multiple awards from the Russian Ministry of Science and Higher Education

  • Winner of St. Petersburg’s "Best Innovative Development" competition

  • Two-time recipient of the Alcoa Prize for outstanding conference presentations

With over 210 publications, Turichin’s work focuses on laser-matter interaction, laser technology development, and industrial applications of laser/hybrid welding. He holds five invention patents and has developed educational software.
