About Me

Gleb A. TURICHIN,

Doctor of Technical Sciences, professor

SMTU Rector

G.A. Turichin graduated from the Physics and Mechanics Faculty of Leningrad Polytechnic Institute in 1986, majoring in “Physics and Science of Metals.” After graduation, he was engaged in research activities at the LPI Department of Welding and Strength of Welded Joints. In the following years, he continued his career in the administrative academic hierarchy: from assistant professor to the department head and dean. In 1991, G.A. Turichin defended his candidate dissertation (on “Physical principles of the process of seam formation in electron-beam welding with deep alloying”) and in 2000, his doctoral dissertation (on “Theoretical foundations and modeling of the process of beam welding of metals with deep alloying”) and received the degree of Doctor of Technical Sciences and the academic title of professor.

Academic and research activities.

In 2001-2014, G.A. Turichin had been the head of the Chair of Welding and Laser Technologies, SPbPU; in 2009-2013, he was the Dean of the Faculty of Materials Technology and Research. Under his leadership, both the Chair and the Faculty had not once won “The Department of the Year” and “The Chair of the Year” contests at St. Petersburg Polytechnic University.

In November 2016, G.A. Turichin was appointed acting rector of the St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University. In March 2018, at the university voting he was elected rector of the St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University and confirmed in this status by the RF Ministry of Education and Science.

G.A. Turichin carries out dynamic scientific and educational activities: he teaches authorial theoretical and practical courses, leads Master’s Degree Programs and Double Degree Programs for international students. He is member of the Dissertation Council of the Prometey Central Research Institute of Structural Materials; R&D Council of the United Shipbuilding Corporation; and the Scientific and Coordination Council of the Ministry of Industry and Trade. He was the winner of the SPbPU “Scholar of the Year” contest and is author of 5 monographs and 160 scholarly articles (567 quotation index; 12 Hirsch index).

A world-class specialist in the field of theory and practical application of laser, hybrid and additive technologies, G.A. Turichin supervises projects on the development of technological installations for radiation materials processing (laser welding, cutting, weld facing and heat processing).

Scientific and organizational activities

In 2004, G.A. Turichin became director of the Institute of Laser and Welding Technologies (ILWT); in 2006, he also became Director for Scientific Work of the Center for Laser Technologies; in 2009, together with the Bavarian Laser Center (Erlangen, Germany) he initiated the establishment of a joint Russian-German Center for Laser Technologies in St. Petersburg; in 2011, he was appointed scientific supervisor of the Laser Center of the Shipbuilding and Shiprepair Technology Center; in 2013, he became director of the SPbPU-affiliated Scientific and Technological Complex for Laser and Welding Technologies.

Since 1997, G.A. Turichin is member of the Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE), and since 2000, he has been Corresponding Member of the Academy of Engineering Sciences named after A.M. Prokhorov.

Besides this, since 2018, he is member of the Inter-Departmental Working Group on the development of additive technologies in RF. He takes part in the work of steering committees of international conferences, such as International Conference of Photonic Technologies (LANE) (Germany), NO-LAMP Conference (Finland), International Seminar on the Numerical Analysis of Weldability (Austria); the Beam Technologies and Laser Applications ILWT international R&D conference.

Awards and Insignia

Turichin is recipient of the RF Government award in the sphere of education for the research and practical and guidance paper “Creation of an innovative research and education system of training specialists of high qualification in the sphere of laser technology of materials processing.” He is a multiple winner of the contest held by the St. Petersburg government for the best innovative development; the “Scientist of the Year” SPbPU contests. Turichin is the holder of diplomas of the Ministry of Education and Science of Russia for active participation in the implementation of scientific works and projects and of the medal of the Security Council of the Russian Federation “For Services in Ensuring National Security”.
