A meeting of the working group on the SIMREC project took place in Kotka

Representatives of AALTO University, University of Helsinki, South-Eastern Finland University of Applied Sciences (XAMK) and the Finnish Environment Institute (SYKE) as well as Russian project participants from SMTU and Admiral Makarov State University of Maritime and Inland Shipping reported the first results and agreed on further researches along with joint approaches to creating "Simulators for Improving Cross-Border Oil Spill Response in Extreme Conditions."

St. Petersburg State Marine Technical University was represented by professor Vadim Goncharov (project section manager, Department of Ocean Engineering and Marine Technologies) who participated in the meeting with a presentation of the results and Tatyana Stepanova, assistant to the director of the Department of International Cooperation.

At Kotka Maritime Research Center, XAMK teem held a demonstration of simulators developed for navigators and ship mechanics.

It’s worth reminding that during the implementation of the project, SMTU Oceanology Department solved the following tasks:

  • mathematical modelling for assessing safe modes of movement of ships in the ice channel;
  • development of recommendations for skippers on safe driving regimes behind the icebreaker to avoid collisions during braking;
  • prediction of oil spill during an accidental spill in a navigable ice channel;
  • methods identification for detecting spilled oil under ice cover.

The session addressed organizational issues and scheduled a meeting of the Steering Group. It will be held in St. Petersburg on March 2-3, 2020.
